Turtle Fencing in Algonquin Park

Research in Algonquin Park has shown that PAINTED TURTLES living close to Highway 60 have a 30% greater chance of being killed when compared to Painted Turtles living away from the vehicle traffic of Highway 60.

Turtle fencing has been put up along Highway 60 right up to our door.  This will hopefully prevent many female turtles, who like to nest in the sand and gravel, from being hit by cars.

We have read that in Algonquin Park and elsewhere in Ontario the snapping turtle population is in decline.

We had the pleasure of watching one snapping turtle dig a hole then lay her eggs in the sand at the Crossroads last week.

Here she is in all her glory!

Baby's First Arowhon

You might remember Deirdre and Steve who had their wedding at Arowhon Pines a few years back.  Their lovely website www.gettinghitchedinthewoods.com still acts as our marketing tool for any future brides and grooms looking to book the resort exclusively.

On opening weekend, their new baby, Rhys, visited for the first time. The parents even claimed that Arowhon was his first word!  Here he is enjoying some of the recreational facilities.

Although still too young to enjoy Lobster in Passionfruit, Mrs A's Potatoes or the banana cream pie, think of all the food discoveries he has ahead of him!

What a cutie!

Morel Mushrooms

Kitchen

morel mushrooms

A couple of years ago, we discovered a small patch of morel mushrooms in an area close to the dining room. Our chefs picked them when they were ripe (just turning colour) and then, with their shoes, shuffled over the area to spread the spores.  What a funny sight, three chefs kicking up dust! Last year we harvested 15 mushrooms and followed the same procedure. This year, as soon as the rain came, out they popped and we counted 22! Our Cornish game hen dish on Tuesday nights with a new morel mushroom sauce will only be available for a few weeks more!

Stand Up Paddle Boards!

Stand Up Paddle Boards

Are you ready to try something new this summer? We've purchased a couple of fibreglass flat lake water stand up paddle boards, to be ready for Canada Day Long Weekend. We figure by then that the lake water will be warmer and we won’t mind falling in….a lot!

These boards are
larger - longer and wider – which makes them more stable and perfect for beginners. Besides being able to explore the lakes and shorelines, it provides a good core and leg workout! We’re anxious to try them out on Little Joe Lake!

We're Open for the Season!

We're Officially Open!

Despite a road washout (that was fixed in time), a delivery truck that broke down, and a 10 minute afternoon storm that produced a 20 hour hydro outage - we had a wonderful opening weekend!

There were guests from Holland and Switzerland, a couple of small retreats and get togethers and guests just enjoying the peace and quiet. There were three brave swimmers, one kayak upset and lots of moose sightings.

Congratulations to BRUCE TATE from Ottawa who won our draw for a SPRING weekend getaway for two! We look forward to welcoming him!

Thank you to all you entered - it was surprisingly quite popular and we are thinking of doing it again during the season. Stay tuned!

The correct answers to the spring contest were:

1. Moccasin Flower

2. Turtle Eggs - Painted Turrtle (oval) and Snapping turtle (round)

3.  Moose

 4. Polyphemus Moth

5. Luna Moth
