Quebec vs Ontario...Cheese

About a decade ago, any good cheese came from Europe and that was what we served. 

Now, Arowhon Pines features only Canada-made artisinal cheeses.

There is a provincial battle of the cheeses happening on our dessert table:  Ontario vs Quebec.

On the Ontario side, we serve Thornloe Casey Blue (Tamiskaming region), Balderson Old Cheddar from Lanark county and Mon Forte Paradiso (goat's cheese) from Stratford.Quebec is proudly represented by Le Ciel de Charlesbois, La Sauvagine (literally "wild one"), Blue Benedictine and Le 1608.

The Latest Trip Advisor Review

We were very thrilled (and a little emotional) to read this review, as we felt that this is what we are all about. Thank you to the couple who travelled in July.  We hope to see you again.


It's hard to find words to do justice to Arowhon Pines. It's easy to say what it's not. It's the opposite of garish, posh, pretentious, glitzy, or even up-to-date. There's no TV, radio, wi-fi, or fitness club. Once you leave Highway 60 and turn on to the 8 km road to Arowhon, you leave the contemporary urban world behind. Arowhon is about being very well taken care of, in a friendly respectful non-intrusive way, in a gorgeous wilderness setting, with modest but extremely comfortable cabins on the edge of a very private lake in the midst of the vastness of Algonquin Park.


The dining room is a rustic culinary cathedral. The menu changes daily and there are choices to please every taste and even those on special diets, such as vegans,are as happy as the omnivores.When we were there dinners included everything from venison to lobster bisque to smoked ham. Breakfasts and lunch were equally all-encompassing. And the desserts are to die for.

Arowhon Pines is a place to canoe, kayak, play tennis, hike, swim, read, relax on the dock or the dining room verandah. Nature and silence surround you. It's a hard place to leave because once you're in heaven who wants to head back to earth? Yet the experience of Arowhon is both transcendental and grounded.

Expensive? Yes. But you get what you pay for (which includes not getting what you pay for at other "resorts" which cater to the young and the restless). By the way, we observed children and teens at Arowhon who were very well behaved, and who were clearly enjoying the unplugged life and the healthy food. They seemed content. It's a family place, too.

The Hunter family, from California, visit Arowhon Pines in the spring. 

Each visit, Mr Hunter brings Edward (our Dining Room Manager) a music CD - this year the best music from Hawaii! 

Mrs Nancy Hunter, we found out, is an artist and she has kindly shared some of her work with us.

The Gray's Visit

We love all our guests!  Mr and Mrs Gray however stand out among our favourites for all they teach us about the wildlife around us - flowers and animals that we might walk by without ever seeing. 

This spring we learned about mocassin flowers and moths.

New York City - Algonquin Park

We don’t get many guests who walk in “off the street”.  But these two guests were amazing!

Heiko Schreiber and his son Bennet from Bayreuth, Germany drove 10 hours straight from NYC (in their gorgeous Ford Mustang rental) because they wanted to see "a little bit of nature". 

We did not disappoint them.  Although they only had a night to spare, they rose earlty (5 AM!) and saw the mist on the lake and a moose feeding on the shoreline.  After a hearty breakfast in the dining room, they explored more of the surrounding area (I do think they took a mid-morning nap)...

We were very sad to see them leave - another 10 hours to New York!  So when you think that a three hour drive from Toronto is too long to have a midweek-getaway, just remember the two of them!

Painted Turtles on our grounds:
While it is known that the survival rate of Painted Turtles is very high what is unknown is how long they will live. It is theorized that Painted Turtles may live up to 300 years and some of the turtles in the Algonqui Park study ponds could be easily a 100 years or more. To date, no reliable method of aging turtles has been developed. The only known method is to mark hatchling turtles as they emerge from the nest - the Park researchers are doing that now.
